Photos Are the Most Underused GBP Feature

Most businesses upload a logo and a few random photos when they first set up their Google Business Profile, and then never touch their gallery again. This is a missed opportunity. Listings with quality photos get 35% more clicks to their website and 42% more requests for directions than those without.

Photos are the fastest way to make your listing visually compelling and build trust before a customer ever contacts you. Here are five tips that consistently boost engagement.

1. Lead With Your Exterior Shot

Your exterior photo helps customers recognize your business when they arrive. Take it during your best lighting conditions (usually golden hour), make sure your signage is clearly visible, and include the street context so people can find you easily.

  • Photograph from across the street to capture the full storefront
  • Include surrounding landmarks if your location is tricky to find
  • Take photos in good weather with no obstructions

2. Show the Interior Experience

Customers want to know what it feels like inside your business before they visit. Interior photos reduce the anxiety of visiting a new place, especially for restaurants, salons, and medical offices.

Capture the atmosphere: lighting, seating, decor, and cleanliness. Use a wide-angle lens to make spaces feel open and inviting. Avoid photos that show empty rooms or cluttered workspaces.

3. Feature Real People, Not Stock Photos

Photos of your actual team and real customers (with permission) perform significantly better than generic stock images. People connect with faces, and authentic photos build the trust that stock imagery cannot.

A candid photo of your team in action is worth more than ten professionally staged stock photos. Authenticity wins on Google Business Profile.

4. Refresh Your Gallery Monthly

Google rewards businesses that regularly update their profiles with new content. Uploading fresh photos each month signals that your business is active and engaged.

  • Add 3-5 new photos per month at minimum
  • Rotate seasonal content (holiday decorations, seasonal menus, events)
  • Remove outdated photos that no longer reflect your current space or offerings
  • Track which photo types get the most views and double down on what works

5. Optimize Photo Metadata

Before uploading, name your image files with descriptive keywords instead of generic names like "IMG_4532.jpg." Use something like "downtown-austin-coffee-shop-interior.jpg." While Google's image recognition is advanced, descriptive file names and geo-tagged photos give your images an extra relevance signal.

Keep file sizes under 5MB for fast loading, use JPEG format for the best quality-to-size ratio, and aim for a minimum resolution of 720x720 pixels.
